I travelled to Invercargill, and then on to Whenua Hou, a sanctuary island off the west coast of Rakiura, to film the long and physically strenuous process of conducting necessary health checks on our planets only remaining 148 kakapo. I followed Auckland Zoo’s head veterinarian James, and the team from DOC’s Kakapo Recovery, as they hiked for 8 hours a day to preserve this precious species.

Fun fact: Douglas Adams (the guy who wrote Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) once described the kakapo’s scent as similar to the inside of an old violin case, and I can confirm this is weirdly accurate.
